iPad Care

Q: How do I clean my device?
A: Use a microfibre cloth to wipe down the screen. Chemicals of any kind should not be used.

Q: How will the iPads be stored at the College?
A: In Primary, students will store iPads in their classroom which is locked when the classroom is unattended. In Secondary, students can store their device in their secure locker.

Q: What sort of case should we use with the iPad?
A: The selection of case is an important decision, as it could save you time and money in the long time. We recommend a good quality case that covers the back and all corners of the iPad, it should also have a good quality front to ensure the screen is well covered when not in use. Some cases also have the added benefit of acting as a stand for the iPad, which can be of assistance.

Q: What precautions can I take against my child losing their iPad?
A: The College recommends that you enable the Apple feature “Find my iPad”. Instructions on how to setup can be found here: http://www.apple.com/support/icloud/find-my-device/

Purchasing

Q: I need to purchase an iPad for my son/daughter. Can I get a discount if I purchase through the College?
A: All pricing for Apple products is set by Apple. Unfortunately, the College cannot provide discounts on the actual device. We have, though, partnered with our preferred supplier Designwyse who will offer parents a package that includes accessories and added warranty protection.

Q: Do I have to have a credit card? And should my details be on my child’s account.
A: The answer is No to both questions. You do not need to have a credit card to sign up with iTunes and we would strongly advise that you never enter your credit card details on your child’s account – iTunes gift cards should be used instead.

Q: Where should I purchase an iPad?
A: You can make your own decision about your purchase location, although the College will provide an online portal through Designwyse to assist families.

Q: How long does it take to charge an iPad?
A: It can take around 8 hours to charge an iPad that is flat. We recommend you make charging your iPad part of the daily routine.

Q: The devices are quite expensive. How will the College seek to reduce costs elsewhere?
A: The College understands that technology has a cost. As a result we are actively trying to find cheaper alternatives in other areas. For example, some physical textbooks may be replaced by iPad compatible alternatives which are usually at a lower cost.

Q: I provided my credit card details on my child’s iTunes account and my child has downloaded apps without my permission. Can I obtain a refund for those items?
A: All sales made through Apple’s iTunes store are final, therefore it is essential you discuss the purchases with your child. We strongly recommend that credit cards are not entered into your child’s account.

Q: Our family already own an iPad, although it is not the newest. Can this be used?
A: Provided the iPad is an iPad 2 or newer this is perfectly fine. There is no requirement to have the newest version. We recommend the device have 32GB storage as a minimum.

iPad Accessories

A: No, a stylus is not required.

iPad Use At Home

Q: Does the iPad work without Internet access?

Q: How does the iPad connect to our Internet connection at home?
A: You will require a wireless router/modem to enable the iPad to use your Internet connection. If you require assistance with your setup at home we recommend you contact your local technology reseller or service agent.

Q: I’m worried about Internet security for my child, how can I reduce this risk?
A: While at the College all Internet usage is filtered and monitored. While at home we recommend you discuss your child’s Internet use and actively monitor their usage. There are services available for free to allow you to setup Home Internet Filtering if this is of particular concern. One such example is OpenDNS (free FamilyShield) which provides a means to prevent access to restricted sites. Information on set-up can be found at OpenDNS.
